Ggantija Temples

Ggantija is the name of a set of two megalithic temples of Malta located in Xaghra (Gozo Island, north of Malta).

They were erected during the Neolithic period (between 3600 and 2500 BC.) and are therefore similar sets predate Stonehenge by. These are two of the oldest complex religious buildings that have survived in the region without being pillaged, demolished or buried.

Because in them have found statues and figures that appear to represent a mother goddess, it was considered that were dedicated to this cult. However, in Maltese, the name conjures up the expression "giant towers" and according to a legend, the towers have been built by huge creatures in order to use them as places of worship.

In 1980, the megalithic temples of Ġgantija were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
