On today, September 17, the Bank of Latvia has proceeded to issue and put into circulation the 2 Euro commemorative coin 2019 under the name of "The Rising Sun" dedicated to the history of the Latvian Coat of Arms . At the same time, this coin also pays tribute to the artistic contribution of Ansis Cīrulis (1883–1942) who in 1915 created the symbol of the Rising Sun that today represents a whole nation.

The currency shows as a main motive a rising sun, the same one that is used in the Latvian Coat of Arms. The inscription "Uzlecošā Saule" (Rising Sun) appears at the top. The name of the issuing country «Latvija» and the year of issuance «2019» are shown at the bottom. The song of the coin, like all other 2 euro coins of the Republic of Latvia, presents the inscription "DIEVS * SVĒTĪ * LATVIJU *" (GOD * HOLY * LATVIA *). The new currency has been minted by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt (Netherlands).

The reason for a rising sun was very popular at the time of the founding of the Latvian state. The rising sun symbolizes a new country.

The solar motif created by the artist Ansis Cīrulis in 1915 was first reproduced on the badges and on the flag of the Rifle Battalion of Latvia Daugavgrīva.

It was also part of the design proposal for the symbol of an autonomous Latvia, created by the artist Ansis Cīrulis in 1917. Later, this motif emerged as one of the basic elements of the Latvian Shield.

The theme of the rising sun was used several times by Ansis Cīrulis in his work, including the first postage stamp from Latvia and in the interior decorations of the Ambassador Hall of Riga Castle.

At the same time, this coin also pays tribute to Ansis Cīrulis's artistic contribution to Latvian culture.

The issuance volume of the 2 Euro commemorative coin «The Rising Sun» is 300,000 pieces distributed in rolls and 7,000 in coincard in BU quality, the latter being put up for sale by the Bank of Latvia itself at the price of € 7.90 .

In principle, Latvia is not expected to issue a second 2-euro commemorative coin this year.
