The Endangered Species series is a collection of coins created by the Portuguese Mint for the purpose of promoting awareness and preservation of endangered species of national fauna and flora, this year with the issuance of a coin, work of Catarina Sobral, dedicated to the Alcar-do-Algarve.

The Alcar-do-Algarve (Tuberaria mayor) is a perennial plant, of small size and yellow flowering. On its obverse the coin has the representation of some specimens of the plant in flower, on a button and with leaves, and: On the left border, the legend "Portugal 2019"; On the right side, the face value «5 €» and the coat of arms of Portugal.
