INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
PAST FOR THE FUTURE AND FUTURE FOR THE PAST: PRESERVATION AND PROMOTION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE SITES
Sighișoara, Romania, October 10-14, 2018

Partners: Sighișoara Municipality, National Institute for Heritage
Place: Sighișoara, City Hall
Dates: October 10-14, 2018
Working Language: English

Since 1972 UNESCO established a frame of protection for cultural and natural heritage (Convention concerning the protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage) and the “World Heritage List” (WHL), as a data base of national monuments of state parties of the convention having outstanding universal value. Romania has eight properties inscribed in the WHL (two natural and six cultural sites). The reports concerning the situation of the World Heritage Sites (WHS) in Romania are done periodically, but most of them tend to be just a formality without any strategic development and sustainable management plans. We consider there is an acute necessity of a national report of the evaluation of UNESCO cultural sites in Romania that could serve as a real management tool for local and central authorities. There is a significant discrepancy between the visibility and the importance given to the sites included in the WHL. These problems could be prevented through better monitoring and management methods, while regional cooperation could be a driver for identifying the best ways to do so at a regional level. Protection of authentic heritage recognised by UNESCO was recently reconfirmed at the 39th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Bonn (2015).
Our project, „Preservation by the development of sustainable strategies for a better protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites from Romania” deals with multi-disciplinary and multi-perspective approach, aiming to develop partnership networks between various institutions from Romania and abroad interested in the project field, as well as transferring good practices on maintenance, preservation and cultural heritage management, community participation and cooperation with local public administration in order to reassess the National Strategy and the management plans in order to be supported by realistic action plans. Only a common and integrated approach will make it possible to enrich UNESCO standards of preservation and maintain the WHS status.

In the frame of the project, an International Conference is going to be held in Sighișoara (Mureș County, Romania) during October 10-14, 2018. Sighișoara is a well preserved historic city of Romania, part of the World Heritage Site, which will be a good frame for conference debates.

The main goal of the conference is to discuss and share good practices on the management of World Heritage Sites.

The debates will be focused on the following sessions:
Session 1: Strategies for Preservation and Safeguarding World Heritage Sites. Debates on Quality Heritage Interventions in terms of policies, programs, regulations on the conservation of cultural heritage.
Session 2: World Heritage Sites - management and sustainable development. Debates on Quality standards and control in cultural heritage project management cycles/conservation works and intervention. Risk management of the World Heritage Sites.
Session 3: World Heritage and Local communities - consulting, involving, participation. Debates on best practices of local communities engaging the management and conservation of World Heritage Sites. Debates on best methods used by local communities to make their sites sustainable.
