It is found on all continents, except Antarctica, it is a bird of prey, mostly solitary and nocturnal, there are about 200 different species. His strange restlessness, his squat body and his disproportionately large eyes, which look towards the front and not on either side of his head, make the owl one of our most distinctive birds. The eighth coin of the series of Colorful Creatures glowing in the dark, issued by the Austrian Mint, is dedicated to this wonderful bird, the Owl.

Few visions in nature are as extraordinary as that of an owl perched, turning its head up to 270 degrees, allowing it to see behind without moving its torso. Although owls can stare, their eyes are still, so they compensate by turning their heads instead of moving their eyes. Owls can do this because they have 14 neck vertebrae, while humans only have 7, which makes the neck of the bird more flexible. The sight is a particular feature of the owl that helps capture nocturnal prey. The creepy nocturnal activity of the bird leads to its bad reputation as an omen of ill health and death in some cultures; a belief that is widespread even today. In Western cultures, the owl is usually associated with wisdom. In modern Japan,

This coin and all of the series have as peculiarity that they have been colored with special inks that make the silhouette of the animal represented in the piece shine in the dark. The Austrian Mint officially issues this piece on September 5.

The coin features an owl in the foreground perched on the trunk of a tree, in the background we see a night landscape of trees, mountains and a full moon, where another owl perched on the branch of a tree spreads its wings.

On the back of the coin the owl is represented among the silhouettes of the other eleven animals that appear in the series of Colorful Creatures.

For this series, a face value of 3 euros is used, which has never before been used by the Austrian Mint, and is also legal currency in the country. For three years one of these coins is being issued, approximately one every three months.

With a maximum circulation of 50,000 pieces, the coins are presented in special packages of ten coins, designed for distributors and individually for collectors.
