According to our colleague Paul (Euromunter), the European Commission has just approved the motive and design to which a commemorative 2 euro coin that Belgium will issue in 2018 will be dedicated. It has already informed us about the presentation of this topic for the currency, but since the subject could be subject to be vetoed by some country, we waited for confirmation to communicate it.

The coin has as its theme the "50th anniversary of the student revolt of May 1968." Although these revolts are usually associated with France, this refers to those that occurred in Belgium. Without the repercussion of Paris, the student agitation in Belgium was the only one of all the Western Europe that made fall a Government with its pressure and still today it leaves felt his footprint in the political life of the country. The little-known and early May of the 68 Belgian mixed global elements, like the fight against the authoritarianism, with other more local, mainly, the linguistic conflict between flamenco and francophones. It all started in 1966, when Flemish students from the University of Leuven vindicated strongly the split of the institution in a Dutch-speaking and a French-speaking wing.

The bad news for this coin, of which 260,000 pieces will be minted, is that it will not be released. It can only be obtained in the "famous" coincards issued by Belgium, or in its Proof version. As for the date of issue, there is nothing announced.
