The Coin
The Pobjoy Whales & Dolphins set has always been a very desirable and successful set and we normally find that the coins are leaving the Pobjoy Mint at a speed of knots. This coin, featuring the Southern Right Whale, is no exception and we think it perfectly captures the majestic mammal.
We are issuing this coin on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory as these whales inhabit the oceans surrounding the island. The issue limit for this coin will be 10,000 in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and 2,000 in Proof Sterling Silver. The obverse features the Pobjoy exclusive effigy design of HM Queen Elizabeth II in exceptional detail.
Behind the Coin
The Southern Right Whale or Eubalaena australis spends the summer in the far Southern Ocean in close proximity to Antarctica where it feeds. In winter the species does migrate north but some have been known to spend their winter in Sub-Antarctic regions. The total population of the species is estimated to be around 10,000 individuals.
These whales grow to become very large in size and an adult female can measure up to 17m in length. They are distinguishable by a few key characteristics which are the callouses on its head, broad backs with no dorsal fins and long arching mouths.
The Southern Right whale forms very strong maternal and family bonds; they follow patterned migration groups and return to birthing spots. They are also very inquisitive at the surface and often approach and investigate boats. One particularly interesting behavior, which is unique to these Whales, is known as ‘Tail Sailing’ where they elevate their tails from the water and curve them to catch the wind. They then remain in these vertical positions for extended periods of time as a kind of game.
