The first quarter (coin of 25 cents) for this 2016 dedicated to the Shawnee National Forest, located in Illinois, will be issued on February 1 for circulation as currency. The coin belongs to "America the Beautiful Quarter" series, dedicated to famous landmarks and national parks in the United States. 








The design shows a view of Camel Rock with vegetation in the foreground and a red-tailed hawk flying over the sky. The inscriptions are "Shawnee," "Illinois", "2016" and "E Pluribus Unum". The coin was designed by Justin Kunz and recorded by Jim Licaretz.

The obverse of all the coins in the series, President George Washington depicted in a restored version of the original portrait used in 1932 in the Washington Quarter.

This coin is number 31 in the series, which began in 2010, each year has issued five new designs and is scheduled to end in 2021, upon completion of the 56 that comprise the collection.

Shawnee National Forest in Illinois


The Shawnee National Forest is home to more natural surface than any other area in the state of Illinois. Its large open spaces offer many recreational opportunities, including the big game, walks on long distance equestrian trails, bird watching, rock climbing and two byways considered national scene: the Ohio River and the Great River Road.

The forest also boasts some of the largest and most diverse spaces. An abundance of wetlands, floodplains and riparian areas that improve water quality and provide important wetlands for migratory waterfowl in the Mississippi Flyway. It was established as a national site in 1939.
