7 erori excepţionale la monede din SUA vândute pe eBay

Articolul de mai jos(în limba engleză, pt. traducere în română folosiți butonul Translate al blogului) surprinde șapte erori excepționale plus un bonus.

"In 1955, a young man working the night shift at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia didn’t notice that the machine used to make the pennies was a fraction of an inch off from where it was supposed to be. As a result, around 24,000 faulty pennies were put into circulation. Today, these “double-die” cents can fetch thousands of dollars.

When coins are made, it usually takes multiple presses to print onto the coin itself. This can potentially result in all kinds of printing errors. However, the United States treasury has many safeguards in place to ensure that these so-called error coins don’t make it out into the wild. This means that the coins that do make it out into circulation are worth much, much more than what they say on the coin.

1. 1955 Lincoln Double Die Wheat Cent
This Double Die features some very cool oxidation, turning the red penny into a maroon and blue-ish hue when under light. With its particularly noticeable double print of the “1955” part of the label, it’s a near perfect example of one of the infamous 24,000 that went into circulation that fateful night. At $1,400 it’s the most affordable penny on this list.

2. 1909 Lincoln Cent Wheat Penny
If you are partial to the fantastic coloring on a coin, this would be the cent to get.Due to a combination of chemical reaction, age, and coin printing techniques of yesteryear, this rare 1909 S. VDB penny has an extremely unique rainbow of colors. Half a trillion Lincoln pennies were made in 1909, and just half a million of those were printed in San Francisco. As such, those with glaring errors are far and few between. The price of this penny? Just shy of $3,000.

3. "Cheerios" Dollar Sacagawea Coin
Some extremely valuable coins weren’t even put into circulation. They were put into cereal boxes. 5,500 Sacagawea dollars were put into 5,500 Cheerios boxes as part of a promotion with General Mills.Collectors began noticing that a few of these coins had a slightly different design. This 2000 Sacagawea “Cheerio” dollar regularly fetches $12,000 at auction. Not bad for something once found in a cereal box.

4. Standing Liberty Quarter 10% Off-Center
Some rare coins are more obviously flawed than others. Printed a full 10% off its mark, this 25¢ piece is auctioning for $13,000. That’s a 52,000% price increase from its original value. Just think about how many quarters you've put into soda machines and arcades without checking for errors.

5. Wheat Cent Triple Struck-in-Collar Multiple Error Coin
This super-rare wheat penny has multiple errors including errors on the side of the coin and a triple-pressing on the front. One error on a wheat penny would make it rare enough; three errors on a wheat penny makes this truly a one-of-a-kind coin. It’s worth $28,500.

6. 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent
You’re probably wondering how a penny could fetch so much. This penny — a 1909 penny printed in San Francisco — is worth several thousand dollars and it's all because it’s one of the only coins that featured the initials of the designer directly on the coin. Americans at the time thought that the initials were too prominent so eventually the coins were taken out of circulation and reprinted in 1918. Therefore, the ones that escaped being reprinted are worth a small fortune now. This one is going for $38,500.

7. A Penny-On-A-Nickel
One of the rarest coins in existence isn’t really a coin at all. It's really just a big mistake. It’s a 1981 penny mistakenly printed on a nickel. And it’s worth $250,000. As much as a small house."

Leo Frese, Consulting, of Greenwood Village CO reports the first known sale of the recently discovered 1919 Double Die Dime.

First found in February of this year, 8-10 examples have been reported to date. The example Frese sold was the third to be discovered.

This piece was found by Bjorn Bergstrom of Kearney Coin Center in Kearney, Nebraska. Bjorn sent the coin to PCGS where he received a grade of VG-8. The coin was sold by Frese at the ANA convention in Rosemont, Illinois to Rich Uhrich, a dealer specializing in rare date collector coins, early American type, and coins with great eye appeal. The coin traded hands in the $4000 range.

Other examples of the date, which many collectors and dealers are comparing to the 1916/16 Buffalo nickel, have been graded by NGC and ANACS. To date, the finest known “straight graded” example is an ANACS XF 40 currently held by a collector in Oregon. The discovery coin, graded ANACS VF 20 is also in the hands of a collector. The remaining known coins have graded Good with the exception of an NGC AU Details coin.

The accompanying photo above shows the bold doubling in IN GOD WE TRUST.
